Man vs. Vegetable

A battle rages daily in our house. On one side, it's a battle for supremacy, and on the other - a battle for survival.

Nearly one year ago, I received a beautiful red shamrock plant for my birthday, which I immediately and proudly displayed by the largest window in the house, where it would be sure to get plenty of direct sunlight.

Life was good for the little plant - until Kari Bou began walking, that is. Since the day she took her first tentative steps (sometime back in June), she has had but one goal: search for and destroy shamrock! This mission has taken on various forms, including dumping the plant on the floor; tearing off and eating its leaves; body slamming it on any available surface; and pounding it repeatedly with a book.

Unbelievably, this little shamrock has fought back in its own way, refusing to go quietly into the night. With each new abuse, its stems develop new dents and its leaves look a little more bedraggled. But for every stem torn away, a new one always manages to grow. Once, when I was sure the poor plant was done for because every one of its stems appeared to be broken beyond repair, all three stems miraculously resurrected themselves! By now there are supposed to be at least 20 stems with leaves, all growing straight up and out. But, though stunted and bent, our little plant bravely holds its own.

So the battle rages on . . . baby vs. shamrock. Who will be the ultimate victor? To be honest, I fear for the plant, as Kari Bou has recently been compared to an "armor-plated rhino", and I can't say I disagree with the assessment. But, if it has survived this long, maybe it will hang in there at least until my next birthday . . . .

LOL - you have no idea! just this morning i had to rescue Zekers from her - she was on top of him, mercilessly pummeling him with a small cow.

And Femininity101 begins when?

love the side-by-side pictures of the two contestants! the one on the right gets my vote, unless, of course, mom and dad continue to intervene on behalf of the plant. she just looks like she ENJOYS it more than the plant :p

Charity, this is Brooke (Hannah) Behar. I just saw you commented on Marci Olsen's blog and came over to see how you are doing. Glad you got to go to Richmond for the celebration...my parents would have loved to be there, but we enjoyed seeing the video they put together. I don't know where you guys are these days (geographically) but I am glad to read a little and see you are doing well!

anonymous - she's not ALL brute; she also loves to mother her dolls. :-)

~d - Oh, she definitely enjoys it; i think it's become more of a game to her now just because she loves the horrified reaction she gets.

Brooke - wow, good to hear from you! I tried to go to your blog but saw that it's friend-protected. Do i have to become your friend to visit? :-) i don't like to give a lot of detail (geographical) on this blog but my email is charity@greenvillegrace.org. I'd love to hear how/ what you guys are doing!

hi charity!
i just got caught up on your blog...always a good read:)
in reference to your post about the kids' weird stuffed animal names, i just thought i would share with you a few of the reifsnider animal names (mostly landon's):

kitty-kitty of the jungle
lion-lion (pronounced wion-wion)
big dog
white dog
little dog
good dog/bad dog
babes

there they are...and how we miss them. they were our lives at one point, so i can relate to your children:) take care!

shamrocks are supposed to have "good luck" right? we'll see...karis seems to be a pretty powerful "force of darkness" toward the green thing. i've never seen such a cute little MUNCHster. all my bets are off. it looks like an evenly matched duel.
glad you liked the plant enough to defend it- it was an unusual BD gift. all my plants are extinct d/t my apathy (black thumb) and a neurotic cat.

Lauren - i've missed you! your list of names is hilarious, but i'm not buying that most of them were landon's idea - nice try. :) it's nice ot see that you guys are every bit as messed up as we are.

Lyndie - neurotic cats would definitely be harder on plants than neurotic children! (at least children don't have the capacity to jump up on countertops, etc that cats do)
